Today is Tuesday, June 30th, 2020. Usually by this date registrations for the next Religious Ed school year would have been mailed out months ago and would be due tomorrow, July 1st. Due to COVID-19, planning for next school year has taken a much different turn.
Mid June our office sent families a link to a Google Survey about the 20-21 school year. We asked a multitude of questions accounting for many possible scenarios and options for the upcoming school year.
80% of families said that they were comfortable returning in person next year.
70% of families said that they were not willing to bring kids multiple times in one night due to social distancing.
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has instituted a Comeback Matrix for parishes to follow in returning to regular parish activities. Religious Education classes is included in this Matrix. The Matrix consists of three phases: Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3. As of today, June 30th, the Diocese of Milwaukee is listed as Phase 1.
Phase 1 Religious Ed= No in person classes
Phase 2 Religious Ed= No more than 50 people in the building during class time and we still need to abide by social distancing in the classroom. At home and online formation are options
Phase 3 Religious Ed= Yes to in person classes, but may still want to supplement with online and take-home components.
Here's the thing:
We don't have a timeline for when the diocese will move from Phase 1 to Phase 2. We certainly don't have a date for when we will finally make it to Phase 3. Our office shut down activities very quickly in March with the news of Covid and uncertainty. We don't intend to remain that way. For this reason we have chosen to implement a virtual formation year for the 20-21 school year. We have more that 50 people in the building on Monday and Wednesday nights and, if we made it to Phase 2 by Fall, we would need to split formation nights into at least two different sessions per night. Sundays would also need to be split into more than one session because we have more than 50 people in the building.
We are here for HOPE, RESOURCES, and to HELP PARENTS BE FIRST TEACHERS OF THE FAITH. The 2020-21 school year may look a little bit different but the core purpose of out Formation Office remains the same.
Let us bring hope and good news to your family!
